Students will plan their fictional narrative by creating a storyboard

Recommendations for Instruction:

  1. Teacher explains that the last part of planning for a story is creating a Story Board. Teacher shows their model story board and explains that TV and movie writers use Story Boards to plan each scene in a show or movie. Teacher tells students that just like TV and movie writers, they are going to create a story board to plan for their fictional narrative.

  2. Teacher explains that students' story boards should have 5 boxes: one for the exposition, one for the rising action, one for the climax, one for the falling action, and one for the resolution. Each box should have a drawing of what is happening in the story, and below each box should be 1-2 sentences describing what is happening in their scene. Teacher explains that a Story Board is basically ike an outline, but for narrative writing!

  3. Teacher directs students to look at the model story board again and explains how all of the scenes lead up to the theme becoming clear by the resolution. Teacher tells students that the most important thing they need to do in creating their story boards is to make sure the character(s) learn the lesson each student decided on the day before.

  4. Students work on their story boards.

  5. As students work, teacher circulates to give them feedback on how clearly their story board conveys the theme/lesson.
